Mattress 101
All you need to know to choose the right mattress.

There’s a lot of noise in the mattress industry.
If you’re like most people, you spend more time using your mattress than any other piece of furniture. The average person sleeps around 8 hours each day, meaning you spend roughly one-third of your life in bed. Yet many of us don’t actually know how to buy a mattress that conforms to our bodies and sleeping habits.
Many assume that buying a mattress will be easy. After browsing through a seemingly endless array of mattress materials, styles, fabrics, and features, they come to realize they know less about how to buy a mattress than they originally thought.
Below, we’ve compiled our Comfort Coaches’ top tips on how to buy a mattress.
The Basics
When you’re buying a mattress, you’ll need to answer several questions. Some of the most basic questions that our Comfort Coaches ask Verlo guests include:
Who is the mattress for?
If you’re buying for yourself or for you and a partner, it’s intuitive to invest in a high-quality, long-lasting mattress.
However, if you’re purchasing a mattress for one of your children, you might be worried about spending money on a mattress that your child will soon outgrow. The reality is that sleep is even more important to children than it is to you, and our mattresses will accommodate a growing child for many years. At Verlo, we strive to find the best quality mattress within your budget, providing great sleep for the whole family.
What is your budget?
Everyone has their own price range when purchasing a mattress, and it’s a significant factor in almost every mattress purchase. As you think through how to buy a mattress, you’ll want to consider your ideal price for a mattress, as well as the most you’d be willing to spend on a mattress purchase.
When considering the ideal price, it’s worth thinking through how much you value a great night’s sleep and—more importantly—how long you plan to own your mattress. When you break down the cost to how much you’re paying per night of restful sleep, the entire process becomes very cost effective.
Do you need a specific size or style of mattress?
If you already own a bed base or prefer a specific size of mattress, that will help you narrow down your list of options. It will also make it easier to budget your mattress purchase, since there’s a significant price difference between different mattress styles and sizes.
Currently, we’re also seeing a number of guests who need help with how to buy a mattress for an adjustable base, or vice versa. Thankfully, all Verlo mattresses are compatible with adjustable bases.
Sleep Habits & Preferences
There are many misconceptions about which types of mattresses are most comfortable and supportive, making it all too easy to buy the wrong mattress for your body, your preferences, and your style of sleeping.
What position do you sleep in?
Your sleeping position plays a big role in how to buy a mattress. A great mattress will conform to your body during sleep, providing relief to pressure points and supporting the body’s natural contours. Your sleeping position will determine where those pressure points and contours occur, as well as how much pressure relief and contouring support you require.
Coach’s Tip: Many people fall asleep in one position, then shift to another in their sleep. You’ll want to note which position you fall asleep in and which position you wake up in.
Do you have sleep-related pain?
Many people go to bed at night feeling great, only to wake up with neck pain, sore joints, and an aching back. If this sounds familiar, you’ll want an expert’s help with how to buy a mattress. Many of these symptoms occur because of mistaken beliefs about which types of mattresses are best for neck, joint, and back support. To make things worse, many people repeat these same mistakes when buying a new mattress.
Coach’s Tip: Do your aches and pains persist throughout the day? In that case, they may be unrelated to your mattress or sleeping habits. If so, a new mattress by itself won’t necessarily provide the relief you need.
Do you sleep hot at night?
If you find yourself hot and sweaty at night, your mattress could be the culprit. Certain types of foam mattresses — including those made of traditional memory foam — can trap body heat, resulting in an uncomfortable sleep experience. Other mattress materials and fabrics are designed to dissipate heat, helping you stay cool and comfortable throughout the night.
Coach’s Tip: While traditional memory foam tends to sleep hot, other types of foam don’t have this issue. Gel memory foams, in particular, do an exceptional job of regulating temperature and keeping you comfortable at night.
Do you and your partner sleep differently?
Many couples have wildly different sleeping preferences. In the past, these couples had to compromise on a mattress that neither partner loved. At Verlo, we can customize both sides of the mattress to suit each person’s preferences. Our Comfort Coaches can help you select a mattress so that each partner gets their very own, personalized sleep experience.
Coach’s Tip: If your partner stirs throughout the night, look for mattresses with motion separation. This way, your partner can toss and turn all they like. Meanwhile, your side of the mattress will remain undisturbed, allowing you to sleep peacefully.
Experience in Person
No matter how carefully you research different mattress brands, styles of mattresses, or mattress comfort levels, you will never know whether a mattress is right for you until you try it out.
Skip the tedious research
Testing mattresses in person will not only help you decide if a specific mattress is the right fit for you, but also whether you’re buying the right type of mattress in the first place. Even after 100+ hours of researching different mattresses, you might discover that what seemed like your dream mattress online is actually a less-than-comfortable mattress in person.
One of the advantages of shopping for a mattress at your local Verlo showroom is the chance to not only test different mattresses but also different comfort levels for each mattress. All of our mattresses are made to order; we can adjust the comfort until you find the level that’s just right for you.

Verlo Mattress Comfort Guide
Firm, Plush, Eurotop, & Hybrid Mattresses
Choosing the right mattress comfort level is one of the most important steps to getting better sleep. At Verlo Mattress, every mattress is handcrafted and built to order so you can choose the comfort level that fits your body and your sleep style. Whether you prefer a firm mattress, plush mattress, eurotop mattress, or hybrid mattress, understanding how each one feels can help you find your perfect fit.
Firm Mattress Feel
A firm mattress provides a supportive, stable sleep surface with minimal sink. This comfort level helps keep your spine aligned and is often preferred by back sleepers and stomach sleepers who need stronger support.
Firm mattresses are designed to keep your body lifted rather than deeply cushioned. Many people choose a firm mattress if they experience back discomfort or prefer the feeling of sleeping on top of the mattress instead of sinking into it. Verlo firm mattresses combine durable support materials with handcrafted construction for long-lasting comfort.
Plush Mattress Feel
A plush mattress offers a softer, more cushioned feel that gently contours to your body. This comfort level is ideal for sleepers who want pressure relief around the shoulders and hips, especially side sleepers.
Plush mattresses create a comfortable cradling sensation while still providing the support needed for proper spinal alignment. At Verlo Mattress, plush comfort options use carefully layered materials to balance softness and support so you can enjoy a cozy feel without sacrificing stability.
Eurotop Mattress Feel
A eurotop mattress features an additional comfort layer sewn flush with the top of the mattress. This design creates a smooth, uniform appearance while adding extra cushioning and pressure relief.
Eurotop mattresses provide a balanced feel that combines softness with strong support underneath. Many sleepers choose a eurotop mattress when they want a luxurious, comfortable surface without the overly soft feel of a plush mattress. Verlo eurotop mattresses are handcrafted with premium materials to deliver long-lasting comfort and durability.
Hybrid Mattress Feel
A hybrid mattress combines the supportive structure of an innerspring mattress with the contouring comfort of foam layers. This combination creates a mattress that offers pressure relief, airflow, and responsive support.
Hybrid mattresses are popular because they provide the best of both worlds. The coil system helps with durability and airflow, while the foam layers add comfort and body contouring. Verlo hybrid mattresses are designed to deliver balanced support and modern comfort for a wide range of sleepers.
