Looking to Buy a New Mattress?

We can help.

If you’re like most people, you spend more time using your mattress than any other piece of furniture. The average person sleeps around eight hours each day, meaning you spend roughly one-third of your life in bed. Yet many of us don’t actually know how to buy a mattress that conforms to our bodies and sleeping habits.

Many people assume that buying a mattress will be easy. Then they start shopping for one. After browsing through a seemingly endless array of mattress materials, styles, fabrics, and features, they come to realize they know less about how to buy a mattress than they originally thought.

That’s where the Comfort Coaches at your local Verlo Mattress® showroom can make a big difference. Our Comfort Coaches are experts who understand the intricacies of how to select a mattress that’s right for you, helping thousands of Verlo guests find their perfect mattress every year. Building a better night’s sleep… for less®.

Having trouble finding the right mattress? Below, we’ve compiled our Comfort Coaches’ top tips on how to buy a mattress.

Our Comfort Coach’s Tips on How to Buy a Mattress

Start with the Basics

When you’re buying a mattress, you’ll need to answer several questions. Some of the most basic questions that our Comfort Coaches ask Verlo guests include:

  • Who Is This Mattress For?

If you’re buying for yourself or for you and a partner, it’s intuitive to invest in a high-quality, long-lasting mattress.

On the other hand, if you’re buying a mattress for one of your children, we often hear guests not wanting to break the bank on a mattress that their child will “grow out of.”  The reality is sleep is even more important to children than it is to you. And the mattress will accommodate a growing child for many years. At Verlo, we strive to find the best quality mattress within your budget to provide great sleep for the whole family.

  • How Much Do You Want to Spend on a Mattress?

Everyone has their own price range when purchasing a mattress, and it’s a significant factor in almost every mattress purchase. As you think through how to buy a mattress, you’ll want to consider your ideal price for a mattress, as well as the most you’d be willing to spend on a mattress purchase.

When considering the ideal price, it’s worth thinking through how much you value a great night’s sleep and — more importantly — how long you plan to own your mattress. When you break down the cost to how much your paying per night of restful sleep, the entire process becomes very cost effective.

  • Do You Need a Specific Size or Style of Mattress?

If you already own a bed base or prefer a specific size of mattress, that will help you narrow down your list of options. It will also make it easier to budget your mattress purchase, since there’s a significant price difference between different mattress styles and sizes.

Currently, we’re also seeing a number of guests who need help with how to buy a mattress for an adjustable base, or vice versa. Thankfully, all Verlo mattresses are compatible with adjustable bases.

Your Sleeping Habits & Preferences

Finding the right fit for your sleeping habits and preferences is typically the toughest part of how to buy a mattress.

A lot of people have misconceptions about which types of mattresses are most comfortable and supportive. That makes it all too easy to buy the wrong mattress for your body, your preferences, and your style of sleeping.

Here are a few of the key areas that our Comfort Coaches focus on when helping Verlo guests with how to buy a mattress:

  • What Position Do You Sleep In?

Your sleeping position plays a big role in how to buy a mattress. A great mattress will conform to your body during sleep, providing relief to pressure points and supporting the body’s natural contours. Your sleeping position will determine where those pressure points and contours occur, as well as how much pressure relief and contouring support you require.

Coach’s Tip: Many people fall asleep in one position, then shift to another in their sleep. You’ll want to note which position you fall asleep in and which position you wake up in.

  • Do You Have Sleep-Related Pain?

Many people go to bed at night feeling great, only to wake up with neck pain, sore joints, and an aching back. If this sounds familiar, you’ll want an expert’s help with how to buy a mattress. Many of these symptoms occur because of mistaken beliefs about which types of mattresses are best for neck, joint, and back support. To make things worse, many people repeat these same mistakes when buying a new mattress.

Coach’s Tip: Do your aches and pains persist throughout the day? In that case, they may be unrelated to your mattress or sleeping habits. If so, a new mattress by itself won’t necessarily provide the relief you need.

  • Do You Sleep Hot at Night?

If you find yourself hot and sweaty at night, your mattress could be the culprit. Certain types of foam mattresses — including those made of traditional memory foam — can trap body heat, resulting in an uncomfortable sleep experience. Other mattress materials and fabrics are designed to dissipate heat, helping you stay cool and comfortable throughout the night.

Coach’s Tip: While traditional memory foam tends to sleep hot, other types of foam don’t have this issue. Gel memory foams, in particular, do an exceptional job of regulating temperature and keeping you comfortable at night.

  • Do You Sleep Differently Than Your Partner?

Many couples have wildly different sleeping preferences. In the past, these couples had to compromise on a mattress that neither partner loved. At Verlo, we can customize both sides of the mattress to suit each person’s preferences. Our Comfort Coaches can help you select a mattress so that each partner gets their very own, personalized sleep experience.

Coach’s Tip: If your partner stirs throughout the night, look for mattresses with motion separation. This way, your partner can toss and turn all they like. Meanwhile, your side of the mattress will remain undisturbed, allowing you to sleep peacefully.

Test Different Mattresses In Person

The most important part of how to buy a mattress is when you test different mattresses in person. No matter how carefully you research different mattress brands, styles of mattresses, or mattress comfort levels, you will never know whether a mattress is right for you until you try it out.

Testing mattresses in person will not only help you decide if a specific mattress is the right fit for you, but also whether you’re buying the right type of mattress in the first place. Even after 100+ hours of researching different mattresses, you might discover that what seemed like your dream mattress online is actually a less-than-comfortable mattress in person.

One of the advantages of shopping for a mattress at your local Verlo showroom is the chance to not only test different mattresses, but also different comfort levels for each mattress. All of our mattresses are made to order; we can adjust the comfort until you find the level that’s just right for you.
