Crabby Co-worker? Tell Her (Carefully) to Take a Nap

Your co-worker, the one who is normally a cheerful team player, is in a total funk. Nothing you or anyone else can do is right. It’s like she woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

But that assumes she actually slept the night before. If she’s that cranky, there’s a good chance she didn’t – or at least not very well.

We’ve all been there. We know what it feels like to be tired and cranky: you’re not very pleasant to work with. Your poor co-workers can attest to that.

Rather than tip-toeing around your temporarily-evil co-worker, do her a favor by suggesting she take a nap. (And then duck before she claws you.)

Three different types of naps

Planned napping is what you do to avoid getting tired later. It’s the kind of nap you take to prepare to staying up late for an event later.

Emergency napping is what your co-worker really needs right now. You do it when you are so tired you can’t continue doing whatever you were doing – like driving or working on spreadsheets.

Habitual napping is the type of scheduled nap your child or grandfather takes after lunch. It happens everyday at the same time.

Benefits of napping

A University of Michigan study found that taking a nap can be an effective way to control impulsive behavior and boost your tolerance for frustration. Researchers examined how even a brief nap can affect your emotional control, i.e., whether you hold back or commit political suicide by speaking out loud the nasty comment in your head. They report that “napping may be a beneficial intervention for individuals who may be required to remain awake for long periods of time by enhancing the ability to persevere through difficult or frustrating tasks.”

You don’t even have to take a long nap to reap the benefits of sleep. The National Sleep Foundation says that a short nap of 20-30 minutes can help to improve mood, alertness and performance.

So the next time you or your co-worker is having one of those off days at work due to a lack of sleep, sneak off to the car for a power nap at lunch.
