Hi, I’m Emma, Verlo Mattress’ social media intern! I’m currently enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, pursuing a degree in Professional Communications and Emerging Media.
Recently in a meeting with the marketing team, we were discussing new topics for our blog and I happened to mention that I sleep with a pregnancy pillow. And before I knew it, I was writing a blog about my sleep habits and how I use a pregnancy pillow – even though I’m not pregnant.
Provided this goes well, I will be reappearing on this blog from time to time, so stay tuned!
I have always struggled with getting comfortable when falling asleep, and considering that I’m in my early twenties, this isn’t something that should be a nightly occurrence. Like most people, my sleep is VERY important to me. When I sleep, I like to feel secure and to have something that I can wrap my legs around and hug. I’ve tried using body pillows on either side of me to give extra support, but halfway through the night I would wake up to find the pillows in disarray or on the floor.
After watching The Back-up Plan movie and seeing Jennifer Lopez’s character pull her pregnancy pillow from out of the dumpster, I thought to myself, “that thing must be super awesome if she’s going to such great lengths to get it back.”
Even though it was just a movie and I wasn’t pregnant, I still wanted to try it. Besides, the thing looked super comfy, and waking up in the middle of the night and having to reposition my pillows was getting annoying.
I went on Groupon and quickly discovered that there are many different pregnancy pillows available, such as wedge, full length, flexible full length, C-shaped, and U-shaped ones. Of course, I went with the most expensive one you can get, and in five business days, my C-shaped pillow was at my front door.
After using my pregnancy pillow for one night, I couldn’t imagine life without it. I’ve always been a stomach sleeper, which isn’t great for your back, but with the pregnancy pillow I can sleep comfortably on my side.
When using the pillow, I wrap my leg around the bottom part and hug it like a body pillow, but because the pillow is C-shaped, I also have a place for my head. The bottom part of the pillow also nicely cups my butt as I sleep, allowing me to feel secure and safe. Also, when I toss and turn at night, I can use it the opposite way with the pillow spooning me and still use the bottom part of the pillow to wrap my legs around it. Sometimes when I’m sitting on the couch, I coil the pillow around my stomach and set my laptop on it, using the pillow as a desk. It is also great for watching TV in bed because you can lay down, but also have your head propped up just enough that you don’t have to strain your neck to see.
You can definitely say that I’ve gotten my money’s worth out of this pillow. The only downfall is that the pillow is huge and takes up about half the bed. So, if you are sleeping with a partner or a high maintenance dog, it will take some getting used to.
Now I completely understand why Jennifer Lopez’s character was pulling her pillow out of the dumpster, because I would do the same thing!
